What’s your shaping philosophy?
You’re only as good as your last board.
Who is your biggest shaping influence?
Working with team riders and pros, and making customs.
What inspires you in your shaping life?
To try and continuously per- fect my craft and to grow in design through the process.
What do you consider your expertise?
My expertise would be channel bottoms, and the use of epoxy resin in the glassing pro- cess of Poly and EPS boards.
What are your most popular models?
Blackstar, Superspud, Super-G, Groveler, and Tri-Stumps.
What is unique about the boards you shape?
All my boards, Poly or EPS, are glassed with S-Glass and Epoxy resin, and come with custom fins.
How is your shaping influenced by your location?
We have flat-faced waves in San Clemente, so trying to create and harness speed is key to board design in this area.
What trends in board design are affecting your lineup this year?
Shorter, wider boards with carefully placed volumes, and skate qualities featured in our summer lineup.
Are there any new technologies you’re integrating into your shapes?
Continued use of EPS foam and epoxy resin with S-Cloth, along with Poly foam.
What advice would you give to customers to help them get the best board possible?
Bring the board you’re riding with you when you’re ordering for the first time.
What’s the biggest lesson learned in your shaping career?
Stay true to the course, be patient and listen.
Tom Curren’s Six Channel Single Fin Auction
This Hamish Graham-shaped deep-six channel bottom single fin is going up for auction as part of the The Surfing Heritage Vintage Surf Auction. The board was custom made for three-time world champion Tom Curren to ride in the big reefs of Indonesia during the initial Rip Curl “Search” trips of the mid 1990’s. Hamish is world-renowned for his deep-six channel bottom boards that are hand-crafted works of art and are available for custom order. The Curren board auction will be held on May 13, 2013.
Hamish Graham Featured on Surfline’s Shaper’s Alley
Superstix’s Hamish Graham was featured in Surfline’s Shaper’s Alley, which featured the San Clemente area’s crew of talented surfboard shapers. Also, the Surfline feature links to previous profile of Hamish, which can be view by clicking here.
Color Pigment Laminations Now Available
We’ve recently introduced color pigment laminations as an option on all custom Superstix including EPS epoxies. The color is mixed with the epoxy resin as it is laminated. The result is a board with a fresh and classic look that will stand out from others at your local break.
We are able to offer this new option thanks to the talented Memphis Mafia himself – James, who brings his laminating talents to the Superstix team and will be handling all our in-house custom laminating.
